Comcast sets Thursday meeting with investors to discuss wireless launch

http://www.fiercecable.com/cable/comcast-sets-thursday-meeting-investors-to-discuss-wireless-launchquote:Some of the telecom industry’s most closely guarded secrets could finally be revealed Thursday, when Comcast hosts what it calls an “analyst event to discuss the details of its previously announced mobile initiative.”
:
Comcast confirmed plans to launch a wireless service combining the strengths of its vast Wi-Fi network and its MVNO deal with Verizon back in September. The launch has been slated for sometime later this year.
:
Last week, FierceWireless reported that Comcast is quietly partnering with Apple as it prepares to launch wireless service under the brand Xfinity Mobile: http://www.fiercewireless.com/wireless/comcast-quietly-taps-iphone-ahead-launch-xfinity-mobile
The cable giant’s name has been added to behind-the-scenes - but publicly available - code that lists carrier bundles for the iPhone. The list of carrier bundles is used by iTunes and iPhones to determine whether the iPhone’s SIM is supported by a service provider with whom Apple has an agreement, then provisions the phone accordingly.
The iPhone's latest list of carrier bundles includes "Verizon_Comcast_LTE_US," and mentions the service "Xfinity Mobile." A source pointed out the reference to FierceWireless, and a different source with knowledge of the matter confirmed that Comcast has indeed partnered with Apple ahead of the launch of Xfinity Mobile. Cancel Comcast due to many outages?
HI
My daughter is a Comcast customer.
About 2 months ago, a tree fell on the utility pole carrying the Comcast cable. The tree broke the pole and the pole was replaced. The main Comcast cable was knocked off the pole and remounted by Comcast. Prior to that incident there was never a problem with the service. Since that incident,, the service drops up to several times a day then restores on its own. (according to my daughter) I think the newest modem/router has been installed in the house and that has been replaced twice due to over heating, fan failure,, or just plain died. (according to the Comcast tech)
There have been 6 to 7 Comcast tech visits to the house to resolve the problem without any success. Another tech is supposed to be there today.
With the failure to resolve the problem after so many visits,, can my daughter cancel the service due to the failure of Comcast to provide the proper service??
Thanks

[Caps] Data usage per month - how much do you use?
Hi Comcast folks. Over in the Optimum area we are discussing data usage, since we are unlimited. I know some of you are, some of you are not. Just curious what everyone here uses per month.
For me, I have an average 20 to 25 devices connected at a time to the network, quite a bit more when family or friends come over. We use Google Wifi (3 pucks) for our router. We use anything from TV's (roku's) to xbox one to steam pc to nest cameras. No cable, streaming only, and we use about 2 to 2.5TB per month (1TB or so down, 1 to 1.5TB up) due to the nest cameras and working from home.

Force connect to 5GHz Xfinity hotspot instead of 2.4GHz
When I connect to the hotspots for Xfiniity it always wants to connect to the 2.4 which is slower. Yesterday I figured out a way to force my Amazon FireTV to connect to the 5GHZ hotspot! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uiwuLfBrRJY
I wish they did not name the two frequencies the same name! They should be Xfinity2.4 and Xfinity5 for example!

[NEWS] xFi Advantage now available in the Central Division
quote:xFi Advantage is a new program being offered in the Central Division.
It includes: XB6 Advanced Gateway
The XB6 advanced gateway.
Unlimited data usage plan.
Advanced Security -- a new security program that protects your home network.
Home WiFi assessments and support -- xFi Advantage customers will have their in-home WiFi performance assessed for fourteen days. If it is determined that the wifi performance is not optimal, customers may receive xFi pods.
Who is eligible?
xFi Advantage is available to all internet customers in the Central Division.
How much does it cost?
If you currently have speeds of 250 Mbps or above, the cost is $15/month. This is a significant saving over renting an XB6 ($13/month) plus unlimited data ($50/month). If you are eligible for the Xfi Pods ($119), it could mean additional savings.
If your current speed tier is less than 250 Mbps the cost is $55/month. It might be more economical to upgrade to a faster speed tier if you want to take advantage of xFi Advantage.

How many downstream channels on a 550 MHz cable system
I'm on the Performance tier, and with today's speed upgrade my SB6120 modem just speed tested at 120 Mbps down / 6 Mbps up (over-provisioned for 100/5).
With the new speeds now in effect, the fastest tier Comcast offers here is Blast, which has a download speed of 300 Mbps.
I may want to upgrade my modem. Normally I would go for the latest tech in the form of a Docsis 3.1 modem.
But if this old 550 MHz cable system I'm on is only running, for example, 16 downstream channels, then I'll just buy an SB6183 and be done with it.
It's not at all likely that Comcast is going to do a rebuild of our cable system in the foreseeable future.
So, any guesses on how many downstream data channels this system is likely to be running? (I can always double check in the Direct Forum, but I'd thought I'd ask here first.) Thanks.

[Signals] Make sure you don?t have damaged cables
So I got a call from Comcast saying I have loose fittings and/or damaged cables. Of course, being the DSLReports user I am I knew that something must be leaking in and low and behold the coax cable leading to my antenna on my roof has a nice 3 inch gash on the outer sheath and the braid is frayed as well which is right next to my coax cable that feeds my internet.
The Comcast guy on the phone ran the test when I called in and evidently says that I passed with flying colors.
Nonetheless, my MB8600 cannot grab any signal from Comcast and now I have a truck roll for tomorrow.
Check your cables!

SB6183 Bad?
I purchased the SB6183 brand new off Amazon, from Amazon (not a 3rd party) and I had to activate it over the phone, since the walled garden didn't come up. This modem replaces the SB6120. Basically what the problem is, sometimes when the computer reboots, or wakes up from sleeping, the modem will connect, but I have a lot of "request time outs" when I ping any website, even 192.168.100.1. I have to either restart the modem, or unplug the ethernet cable from the computer quite a few times to get the modem to fully work and for the "request time outs" to go away. I never had this problem with the old outdated SB6120, even the day before I got this new modem.
When I call Comcast, they want to send a tech out. I think the modem is bad. I tried multiple ethernet cables. Also, their is nothing in the Event Log tab on the modem.
Is the SB6183 a good modem? I want to get your thoughts before I return this modem and exchange it for another one.

[NEWS] Comcast incorrectly charged 2,000 customers for exceeding data c
quote:Comcast's data-usage meter gave thousands of customers inaccurate readings for two months because of a software bug, causing the broadband provider to incorrectly charge about 2,000 users for exceeding their monthly data caps. Comcast has admitted the error and told Ars it is giving refunds and additional credits of $50 each to customers who paid data overage fees that shouldn't have been assessed.https://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2019/10/comcast-incorrectly-charged-2000-customers-for-exceeding-data-cap/

Imposed Cable Fees Cost Consumers 28 Billion A Year
quote:The average cable bill in our study costs consumers $217.42 a month. Of this number, a little less than $157 on average was determined to be the base package price once all fees, taxes, and charges for premium services were subtracted from the total price. In other words, the average consumer pays more than a 33% mark-up over the base price of service because of add-on fees of all types.https://advocacy.consumerreports.org/research/2019-cable-fee-report/

[Connectivity] Do I have FTTN? (Fiber to the node)?
Is my Xfinity 275Mbps down and 10Mbps up connection considered a FTTN connection? Where basically the fiber comes to a node in the neighborhood then gets split into coaxial cables hence letting me connect a cable modem to my wall that eventually ends up to a CMTS?

Speed Test site Fast.com isn't accurate (to say the least)
Using chrome browser i get a crazy high test result (i have gigabit with xfinity) using wifi... but using FireFox i get a more reasonable result.
Fast.com is showing higher results than any other speed test i've tried... but the chrome results are showing speeds (sometimes it peaks at 3.0 gbps) that i know my service is not capable of.
My ac1900 wifi adapter isn't capable of speeds that it shows during the test.... in other words, i wouldn't recommend ever using their site (owned by Netflix i think)

[Plan] Get food stamps, qualify Comcast Internet (15/2) for $9.95 / mo!
I just checked the www.internetessentials.com site, and it appears to have been re-designed, slightly, and the qualifications, have seemed to expand to include customers who qualify for and are receiving Medicaid or SNAP benefits.
This is decent of Comcast to expand eligible subscribers to recipients of those programs (among the other program qualifications that they accept), but I would encourage them to adopt the footprint-wide availability of a "Budget" plan, for $20 or less, monthly, all-in, at whatever speeds make the most sense for basic internet operation, for at least a single user, without qualification, even if that meant offering it in a pre-paid manner.

best/cheapest modem on Xfinity
Asking this question for my brother who has an older 8x4 modem. What is regarded as the best customer owned modem to use on Xfinity? Not sure what the plan he's on is called, but do know it has a max download of 60 Mbps. Current modem causes constant buffering on any kind of videos and he can never get full speed on any download test.
Did a quick search on here but didn't really find anything. Doing a quick search at Best Buy comes up with the Motorola MB7621 for $79.99. Brother is on a very tight fixed income so definitely looking for the best deal.
Thank you
Edit:
Ok, let me ask this. Will the modem listed above, https://www.bestbuy.com/site/searchpage.jsp?st=motorola+mb7621&_dyncharset=UTF-8&_dynSessConf=&id=pcat17071&type=page&sc=Global&cp=1&nrp=&sp=&qp=&list=n&af=true&iht=y&usc=All+Categories&ks=960&keys=keys work for sure on Xfinity and can I activate it online with no problems?
Edit 2:
Best Buy also has this modem, https://www.bestbuy.com/site/arris-surfboard-32-x-8-docsis-3-0-cable-modem-white/4600801.p?skuId=4600801 which is available at store. Other one isn't now that I looked at it again. Doesn't cost much more and has 32 channels down also. Personally, I think I would prefer this modem.
What do you people on Comcast/Xfinity think?

[Security] XFi Security Rant
So today is National Coming Out Day! I wanted to check out a couple of LGBTQ news sites about this and behold... my XFi Setting BLOCKS these sites. Now, I understand that a porn site (I'm well over 18 years old) would be blocked, but these are news sites.
Yes, the sites are accessible once I turn the XFi security off. This is the free version, not the paid version. Of course, there's no option to modify per URL.
