Cancel Comcast due to many outages?
HI
My daughter is a Comcast customer.
About 2 months ago, a tree fell on the utility pole carrying the Comcast cable. The tree broke the pole and the pole was replaced. The main Comcast cable was knocked off the pole and remounted by Comcast. Prior to that incident there was never a problem with the service. Since that incident,, the service drops up to several times a day then restores on its own. (according to my daughter) I think the newest modem/router has been installed in the house and that has been replaced twice due to over heating, fan failure,, or just plain died. (according to the Comcast tech)
There have been 6 to 7 Comcast tech visits to the house to resolve the problem without any success. Another tech is supposed to be there today.
With the failure to resolve the problem after so many visits,, can my daughter cancel the service due to the failure of Comcast to provide the proper service??
Thanks

Can't Find ARRIS T25 Modem for Purchase
Comcast list the Arris T25 as a DOCIS 3.1 modem with voice that is supported on their network, but I can't locate this devise on the Arris website nor does it appear for sale on any other site or store. Does this modem go by another model number?
Thank you

[Equip] Own Gateway?
I've read an article today on Huff Post about buying over renting a Comcast XFi Gateway. I just upgraded my equipment last month to the X1 Package and thought about buying my own modem/gateway. We have Triple Play (with 2 phone lines). According to this article, users who have purchased their own modem instead of renting the XFi gateway have a "surcharge" added by Comcast so it's almost the same cost as the rental.
Is this accurate?

Comcast outage this morning
Anyone else having any issues? In the Richmond, VA area my service is down with no signal.
Normally would not post as probably local, but when trying to login to the the Xfinity web site to check local status, using a hotspot, the website seems hosed also.
I cannot get to anything other than what you see in the pic. Well, at least noting account based.

[Connectivity] Xfinity Gigabit service specifics (modem type, etc)?
I'm considering cutting the cord from my current Xfinity Internet (150mbps/5mbps) + TV package and was surprisingly informed over chat with Xfinity that gigabit service is available in my area.
The service was advertised as 1,000mbps down and 35mbps up for $89 a month. While not symmetrical this would be a huge improvement for me as the current upload speed limit is getting painful.
The rep was not able to answer questions about what kind of equipment and addressing is used for the connection. I would need to know that my existing CPE infrastructure (I run a Fortinet 61E hardware firewall that uses a Cat5e connection to a DOCSIS cable modem and uses IPV4 addressing) would not be impacted (well my current firewall can't take advantage of those speeds but I'd consider upgrading it or doing a VM FW installation).
Rep quote on this;
"However with the gigabit speed we will provide you the new upgraded modem that is Xb6 also your fibre cables will change as well so you will get the correct speed".... doesn't make much sense to me.
"fibre cables will change".... hmmm.... my service is over coax now, does this mean they have to run fiber in for this service? XB6 seems to be a DOCSIS 3.1 technology device. Can I buy my own compatible modem? I assume IPV6 only?
I prefer not to rent equipment so if there is a new type of modem needed I would prefer to buy something they would support rather than doing a rental.
Thanks

[Equip] phone modem
I just upgraded to extreme pro with comcast phone. Saved $50 mo. this way. The problem is I bought a new DOCSIS 3.1 modem only. Is there anyway to buy a modem with phone connection and use it for phone only and use the DOCSIS 3.1 modem for internet? Split the cable so each modem gets a signal.

[NodePlus0] General Discussion of N+0 deployment activity
I would like to start a thread where we can keep track of the areas where Comcast has started deploying N+0 equipment. Earlier this year Comcast started pushing fiber deeper into the neighborhoods around me but close to 10 months after it was strung/buried it is still sitting unspliced and unlit. The comcast plant in my area is an old Adelphia region that is built on a 750MHz architecture so it's due for upgrade but it appears as if comcast is stalling on these upgrades for some reason. Has anyone else noticed any aggressive node splits and/or amplifier reduction in any other markets?

Comcast EPON Router is using utopia.net DNS suffix - Hijacked?
Is anyone using this Equipment and are you getting Connection-specific DNS Suffix utopia.net ??
I ran into a nasty issue after I moved to my new apartment. For some stupid reason the new building I moved into does not have Coax hook-ups so I was forced to use the Comcast EPON equipment listed below. :(
Everything seemed fine for the first week or so but then I had a VERY SUSPICIOUS issue where the modem switched from the DNS suffix hsd1.ca.comcast.net to utopia.net after about a week of using the new service. The Wireless router/gateway is a PC X5001. This Modem Pairs with the cable box and is the only option for my location since this is such a new service where it connects direct to fiber coming into the apartment. I've always used Coax equipment in the past and never had any issues.

I didn't know the DNS suffix was switched until Norton was flagging all sort of these errors from any Windows system I would boot up. However, I'm almost certain it was hsd1.ca.comcast.net when I first got service hooked up.
This was the error that was coming up and alerted me of issues. I've also attached a screen shot.
"ERROR: Malicious Site: Malicious Domain Request 21"
[att=1]
I've attached this attack to this post. Hopefully it works.
This was happening on my Windows 7 and two Windows 8 systems. At one point it was constantly coming up with this message over and over on all of my Windows boxes. I did some searching for Comcast utopia.net and found thread mentioning it was a potential Malware infection that got into my system(s). I don't game or click on any suspicious links and am very security oriented.
Unfortunately my Norton Ghost stopped working over a year ago so I didn't really have a way to restore my OS without trying to recover with a Windows installation CD. I rebooted in Safe mode and ran Malware bytes scans and a full Norton scan and neither program found anything. I also tried using the Norton Power Eraser scan but it didn't find anything. I called Comcast and told
I found multiple threads on this issue and most of them seemed to suggest my computer was infected!! :o
However, I was very skeptical about this and was almost 100% sure it was the equipment that was hi jacked and trying to send malware to my computers. I'm pretty sure it was some form of ransomware that was trying to use various attack vectors to infect my system(s). It seemed like it was going after OfficeClickToRun.exe & OfficeC2RClient.exe to spread an infection and encrypt my files. Based on some of the threads I read it seemed like it was possibly wannacry.
I made the terrible mistake of trying to follow this thread and installed the free version of Avast A/V (BIG Mistake).
https://forums.xfinity.com/t5/Your-Home-Network/DPC3941T-Modem-hacked-Utopia-net/m-p/2888755#M252786
This thread recommended installing their software so you could remove the adapter associated with utopia.net.
Per this part of the thread>

1: Go to network, and in avast, if it says that utopia.net is your network, turn it off.
Then, go to Firewall - settings - network profiles, and then going down the list until you see "utopia.net" in the list of network profiles. Delete it using the right click drop-down menu.

Needless to say the version of Avast I downloaded did not have this option and then I removed their software. I even ran the avast uninstall afterwards via avastclear.exe utility. When I rebooted in safemode and ran this I was surprised by how much stuff it removed when I thought it already removed most of the Avast software when I was used the regular add/remove programs in control panel.
Anyway, I seriously do not trust Avast at all anymore because when I run packet captures after purging their software it's still communicating with their servers!!! *bangs head*
Here's some other threads I was reading about utopia.net. All of them are pretty old and seem to coincide when wannacry first started coming out. Around May 2017
https://www.dslreports.com/forum/r30150713-DNS-hijacking

This one seemed relevant but I didn't have any of the rouge processes running this guy mentioned.
https://forums.malwarebytes.com/topic/247078-how-do-i-remove-utopianet-malware/
Anyway, I called Comcast and told them about this and requested they swap out my router/modem. The only problem is since this is a such a new service that they only have in a few communities using this setup and only have the exact same model to swap out with. It mates with the cable box and is the only way the cable box can work. You can do wireless or wired to the cable box for their cable service. Right now I have a 30ft Ethernet cable going to my cablebox.
Also, this is what Norton showed when it was trying to infect my system. The same thing I mentioned above and attached to this post.
Attacking Computer: npi9d5be5.utopia.net
Attacker URL: wpad.utopica.net/wpdat.dat
Source address: npi9d5be5.utopia.net (208.91.197.27)
When I would check my DNS through the router and ipconfig /all it was still showing I was using Comcast DNS servers 75.75.75.75 & 75.75.75.76
It also showed the same thing for DNS when I connected to my router via the IP Gateway.
And it still does now.
However, it created a strange connection to this Tunnel Adapter the first time this happened.
Tunnel adapter isatap.utopia.net:
Connection-specific DNS Suffix . : utopia.net

I've manged to completely disable to Tunnel Adapter and haven't seen this connected since I ran netsh and disabled it. I know this has something to do with IPv6 but it seemed suspicious also.
After they came out and swapped the router it went back to hsd1.ca.comcast.net for about 5 days and then suddenly switched back to utopia.net like it is now as shown below.
Ethernet adapter Local Area Connection:

So, I was thinking my system(s) might still be infected and causing issues even though Norton wasn't coming up with all sorts of ERROR: Malicious Site: Malicious Domain Request 21 anymore.
It could be that I was blocking all the upopia.net domains and crap from communicating with (208.91.197.27) via my host file ,etc but I'm not sure.
So, I had Comcast come out again and swap the modem a 3rd time since their security team wasn't even the slightest bit helpful when I contacted them and sent them my firewall logs the 2nd time this happened. The security team never got back with me and didn't seem to know of any utopia.net issues on their devices or network.
One of the things that still worries me is I see tons of these request in my firewall logs everyday.
FW.IPv6 FORWARD drop , 3171 Attempts, 2019/9/30 17:58:00 Firewall Blocked
FW.IPv6 FORWARD drop , 31 Attempts, 2019/10/02 18:35:58 Firewall Blocked

FW.IPv6 FORWARD drop , 3575 Attempts, 2019/10/01 17:58:01 Firewall Blocked
So, the 3rd time they came out I disconnected EVERYTHING from my network and after the tech swapped out the Router I booted up with a Live Linux DVD to insure it wasn't my computer that's causing me to get the utopia.net DNS suffix. Sure enough after I booted a single laptop using a Linux mint Live DVD it went right to utopia.net per the logs in /var/log/syslog. I asked the tech about this and he called his supervisor and his supervisor said that it supposed to get utopia.net but I wasn't very convinced or assured. After the first router almost certainly was trying to infect my computers I've lost a lot of trust in my ISP I've been using for almost 20 years now.
I've been very skeptical ever since this happened and I don't even know if I trust my computer or internet connection anymore. I tried switching to Century Link but apparently they aren't available where I live.
I appreciate any info and if anyone has seen this or can confirm if this is 'normal'??

[NEWS] xFi Advantage now available in the Central Division
quote:xFi Advantage is a new program being offered in the Central Division.
It includes: XB6 Advanced Gateway
The XB6 advanced gateway.
Unlimited data usage plan.
Advanced Security -- a new security program that protects your home network.
Home WiFi assessments and support -- xFi Advantage customers will have their in-home WiFi performance assessed for fourteen days. If it is determined that the wifi performance is not optimal, customers may receive xFi pods.
Who is eligible?
xFi Advantage is available to all internet customers in the Central Division.
How much does it cost?
If you currently have speeds of 250 Mbps or above, the cost is $15/month. This is a significant saving over renting an XB6 ($13/month) plus unlimited data ($50/month). If you are eligible for the Xfi Pods ($119), it could mean additional savings.
If your current speed tier is less than 250 Mbps the cost is $55/month. It might be more economical to upgrade to a faster speed tier if you want to take advantage of xFi Advantage.

Can you have own modem & router for internet if you get TV?
I have had internet only from Xfinity since 2012. I have nad use my own modem and router. I am thinking about adding TV. Will I have to use an Xfinity modem-router if I get TV or will I be able to use my existing modem and router?
If you can use your own modem and router, how does it work - a splitter that splits the main cable into cables that feed the modem and ones that feed the TV? If so, does that degrade the internet connection?

Large packet loss periodically every day
I've got 250/10 service in Alexandria, VA. Generally performance has been good until the past few weeks. Started to notice internet was slow loading web pages, sometimes they time out. Then problems with webinars, streaming video, and holding a corporate a VPN connection.
Most of the time speed and quality are good, but several times a day I have considerable packet loss (from 10-90%). I'm pinging Google, Comcast 75.75.75.75, and my Comcast upstream IP. My IP is solid; never any missed pings. I can see periods of 1-10 min where I'm not getting responses from internet hosts.
My questions are:
1. what's the best way to address this with Comcast?
2. Any other thoughts on the problem?
3. I don't see any issues with my modem stats; am i missing anything?
Thanks VERY much.

Intermittent Drops & high uncorrectable but good signal level
Hi, I am in Tracy, CA and I have an SB6183 modem that has been dropping out very frequently as of late. I used to be able to go for at least a week without a connection drop (and I check this through uptimerobot which is mapped to my ip & by just looking at the modems uptime), but as of late, my connection has been dropping almost multiple times a day.
I used to have the modem connected directly to the line that comes into to our cable closet but I read online that the recommended upstream power was above 40, so I connected a coupler and a short 10 ft wire to try and increase the upstream power. That did little to the signal levels though. In my event log I see a bunch of T3 timeouts and a few intermittent T4 timeouts. I'm not sure what to do.
Attached are the signal levels. This screenshot was taken after nearly 24 hours of uptime. I have never seen this modem have this many errors before (It used to be an almost perfect connection with no errors before). Also, when it works, it works really well. No speed decreases or anything (175mbps plan). Though I have noticed one time when it went out, I was on a voice call through steam and playing an online game, all of a sudden I start to get huge amounts of packet loss and the voice chat sounds really distorted so there's that.

Bad Signals + Large Uncorrected + Low Speed
For the past three weeks, I've been noticing some pixelating and freezing on all the TVs in the house when watching a HD show. Decided to call Comcast and the rep scheduled an appointment for next Friday (earliest I can be home). She asked if I had any issues with the Internet and told her no, but after the call, decided to check and whelp, looks like I have some issues with my signals. Speedtest (direct and with router) doesn't even go above 33Mbps down. I'm on the 150Mbps package (soon to be 200Mbps). I'm wondering if the amp they installed 5+ years ago went bad? Or maybe it's time for a new drop?

[Security] Does Comcast pay any attention to RDP login attempts?

Just curious if Comcast / Xfinity pay attention to this sort of activity and do anything to block the ip addresses of the offenders?
Please no advice about VPNs, strong passwords, certificates, etc. I'm familiar with all of that, the question is about anything that takes place on Comcast's end. Thanks!

Netflix service in Xfinity TV package be upgraded and?

I would vastly prefer the Netflix package but only if the Netflix service can be upgraded to 4K (I am willing to pay a surcharge) and the service/account can be used on other devices - I want to use it Apple TV 4K since it is one of only two devices that can do Atmos audio on Netflix.

[Equip] MT7711 approved docsis 3.0 24X8 modem doesn't use puma 6 chipset
Warning, this starts with a bit of a rant about the forever increasing costs of comcast services -- skip below to "trimming off the rentals" to get to the information on the modem.....
My 77 year old sister asked me to help her get her comcast bill down (again). Only 4 years ago, she was paying $129/month for triple-play (basic HD cable with a dvr, telephone, 150 Mbps internet). Because she moved (literally across the street), comcast told her that she couldn't use the cable modem/wifi router/MTA she owned and had been using, so she's been renting since then, which, as you know has now gone up to $13/month. When she moved they also told her she could no longer use the free SDTV cable tuning box, so she's been renting an additional HD tuner box for $6.99 per month for her bedroom tv. Over the past few years, with these rentals plus other miscellaneous "fees" comcast has added plus increases, her bill has gone up to $199/month!
A couple of years ago she tried to talk to the retention department about getting her bill back down, but they blew her off saying she couldn't get a better rate. One call today to that department by me got her bill knocked down to $165/month, and included a HD DVR at no charge (required a 24 month commitment, but she's okay with that).
Trimming off the rentals, which now total $20/month.
I did some research to figure out the best modem for her so she can get rid of the $13/month rental fee. Her modem needed to be a fast (but not gigabit) cable modem, strong fast wireless AC wifi and a router, and include a telephone MTA. Because she'll never want or need gigabit service, she didn't need to get a docsis 3.1 modem/wifi/MTA (which cost $300 and up currently), but most of the existing docsys 3.0 modems that support decent internet speeds and streaming and have decent wifi (including the one she is currently renting from comcast (a Cisco DPC3941T)) are built using the problematic Intel Puma 6 chipsets, which are known for causing problems with streaming. If you aren't familiar with this issue, here's an article: https://www.theregister.co.uk/2017/04/11/intel_puma_6_arris/
Note that Intel has also admitted the same issues exist in the older Puma 5 and newer Puma 7 chipsets, which means that some of the newer gigabit cable modems will suffer from the issue.
What I discovered in my research was a newly released modem by Motorola (November, 2018), the MT7711, which uses a broadcom chipset, has 24X8 cable connectivity (per comcast's https://mydeviceinfo.xfinity.com/device/motorola-mt7711-689 page it can connect at up to 864 Mbps), has wireless 3x3 AC1900 with beamforming (the comcast page erroneously says it doesn't have wifi), a 2 line MTA, and has a 2 year warranty. This modem has been certified by comcast, so it will be fully supported by them. It's not cheap -- currently $199 on Amazon, but it should perform well and won't quickly become obsolete, and is significantly less than a docsis 3.1 modem with the same capabilities (except for the unneeded gigabit capability).
We'll get rid of the $6.99/month bedroom cable box by using a Roku Streaming Stick+, currently $49.99 on Amazon, and using the xfinity app to tune in to live and streaming channels). This was suggested by a comcast employee, and has been confirmed by a number of reviews on this Roku stick. Plus, I think she'll like the Roku interface, it's RF remote (doesn't need line-of-site like IR remotes do), it's search capabilities, and the various free roku apps (roku calls them "stations") she will be able to access.
By ditching these equipment rentals, my sister will save $240 per year, so the equipment will pay for itself in less than 13 months, and from then on it just saves her money.
I hope this information is helpful to others trying to cut costs on their xfinity services.
Philip
