[Rant] For those in GA hit by data caps: Be sure to file a complaint!

http://consumer.ga.gov/consumer-services/filing-a-complaint Be sure to file a complaint explaining that these new data caps are anti-consumer and are misleading and unfair to consumers, especially since they are violating net neutrality. I just filed mine today. Let's get heard about this.

[Equip] My DOCSIS 1.1 modem is still working

They sent me a letter. "Replace your old modem, it won't work after December 2, 2013." I didn't replace it. They sent me another letter. "Hey, you still haven't replaced your old modem, it won't work after December 2, 2013." I didn't replace it. Then they injected pop-up messages in my browser, saying the same thing. Then they sent me a new modem, although I didn't ask for one. By FTC rules, I could have kept that "unordered merchandise" as a free gift, but I turned it in. December 2, 2013 has come and gone. It's January 6, 2014, and my old 1.1 modem works just fine. I wonder how many people Comcast conned into renting a new modem, or buying one?

[Connectivity] Putting modem into bridge mode

I used to be able to put my modem into bridge mode through one of the Comcast guys at the Comcast Direct forum. It seems there's nobody there anymore. How do I get in contact with someone now? Contacting Comcast through their usual support is a joke and they act like I don't know what I'm talking about when I say "bridge mode".

[Speed] PSA: Slow WiFi on Comcast? May be Comcasts Fault

There is a critical bug in Comcast's network configuration that is likely crippling thousands of routers and pretty much only Comcast has this issue. It is an edge case interaction caused by bad DSCP information coming from Comcast and poor condition handling by the WMM driver on certain linksys/cisco eseries routers and possibly others as well. This issue can appear on both stock and modded routers. Comcast's network is misconfigured and has been for years and has likely caused many people to needlessly replace fully functional routers, IPv6 speeds always worked for me because DSCP was configured correctly for that but it is incorrect for IPv4. Since the only packets with this bad information are the ones that are being downloaded upload is not affected nearly as badly. This can affect any router that uses QoS or WMM(every wireless N router has WMM) This is the fix I made and used on an e2000 and e3000 running shibby 112: put this in init scripts section: insmod xt_DSCP.ko and this in wan up scripts: iptables -t mangle -A PREROUTING -i vlan2 -j DSCP —set-dscp 0 these may need to be modified slightly depending on configuration. This corrects the bad DSCP header information as soon as a packet hits the WAN interface on a router. DSCP as received from Comcast's network is 0x08 this is the lowest priority possible which WMM interpertes as being unimportant to transmit quickly. The scripts listed changes the DSCP on all packets to 0x00 which essentially means unclassified which WMM handles properly. This is how virtually every other ISP uses DSCP and is why the issues is specific to Comcast. I have confirmed this issue on connections in both Chicago and Boulder, CO and it is likely to be present on Comcast's entire network. Cisco appears to have at some point released new WMM drivers for stock firmware that largely resolve the issue on current stock firmware, otherwise implementing my temp fix as a GUI option would probably be a good idea for the affected routers. The ability to assign DSCP to all traffic on chosen interfaces also might be a good thing to add anyways.

[WiFi] xfinitywifi channel

I recently started having wifi difficulty at home, where I have comcast wifi. I then noticed the SSID xfinitywifi, which appears to be from my comcast wifi gateaway (it disappears if I unplug the gateway). However, it seems that xfinitywifi and and private SSID are using the same channel, which I assume would cause issues. Am I right on that point? I tried logging into the gateway, and setting it to a different channel, but that also changes the channel of xfinitywifi. When I log into my account on comcast.net, I can't find an option to turn this off, which seems to be the way to to this based on google searches.

[IPv6] odd behaviour when enabling ipv6 in router (t3/t4 reboots)

I have a SB6141 modem and an Apple Extreme Gen 5 router. Every time I enable ipv6 mode in the router, the modem starts having t3 /t4 errors and the modem reboots multiple times in a day. If I disable ipv6 (local link only), the modem is far more stable. Why does this happen? I do get an ipv6 address from the router and everything checks out fine until I see the timeout errors in the log. The issues starts up with a flip of a switch, it seems. Any suggestions? Should I try a Broadcom based modem?

[Speed] Slow download in Memphis area?

So I popped by one of my clients today, and they are trying to download via ftp, and its painfully slow compared to what it normally is. After they finish up a file, for good measure I reboot everything. No change. We figured its probably on the servers end and shrug it off. I get home, and start downloading a linux distro, and its painfully slow here as well. Speed tests fine in both locations. So I remote access to my work desktop and start the download there....bam, works great. Coincidence, or is something going on? Signal levels and stats, speed tests and all that are just fine. Just wondering if Comcast is having some weird localized issues... -Alan Edited to add topic group category. uid://455626

[Connectivity] Modem doesn't connect, No info shown for Upsteam and Downstream

Hi, I'm currently a comcast customer living in Marietta, Georgia having a major issue with my internet. I currently live in a apartment and am a user of the Comcast Blast service. The issue is that about a week ago the internet suffered a service outage and the modem I had rebooted but would not connect to the internet. I used every know method to fix the issue(Replacing the modem, Power cycling, connecting the modem directly to the computer, etc.), with no success. I took a look at my modem and only the DS light was flashing, I decided then to look at my modems logs and found that there was no Information under Upstream and Downstream,(Ubee Cable Modem Comcast provided.) All there is N/A for both sections, and when I go to status My acquired downstream is in the low 1000s, N/A for Ranged Upstream, and the Provisioning State stuck at In progess and DS scanning under comments. I already had a tech come out and look at it only for him to say that the wiring in the apartment building has gone bad which puts me in a very bad spot. I'm looking to see if there was something I missed that would be a decent fix I could do on my own. Last piece of info if this might spark something, when I went to replace my modem at a service center there was a massive number of people returning Wireless Gateways(This was a few days after the service outage). Any help would be appreciated.

Our service is usually great, except today I have had many disconnects, the modem always re-sync's on it's own in 5 to 20 minutes, but it's annoying. Is this a temporary issue caused by the cold (my outdoor temperature probe says 15.1F) or is this a bigger issue? My modem signals attached.

[Speed] Netflix Comcast does not support HD streaming

$

I do not know who to complain to or what to do about this but there is an issue with streaming HD via Netflix and Comcast. My Comcast performance service constantly measures around 28 Mbps on their speed test as well as other snap shot testers. That says I should be able to easily stream HD no issues. However, this Netflix report showing my streaming yesterday reflects fluctuating speeds supporting SD downloads. I have never been able to reliably stream HD via Comcast Netflix. It just does not work. See attachment. So what to do. One of the reasons I changed my ISP to Comcast so I could stream HD. Who do I complain to? Why is this happening? Is there a fix from my end? Started on Friday through Sunday and Monday all was ok no issues but today its just pain full. Cant play BF4 cause of lag spikes from 200+1000+ sporadically. I changed my coax cables/tips all direct from the pole to home without any splitters. Even changed to a new modem lol that was an interesting situation. But Im noticing the Cermak backbone always having high pings 150-250+ lots of the time it even times out. Help measure the global Internet!

$

Based in the U.S. and want to help measure the global Internet? There is a program called RIPE Atlas (see https://atlas.ripe.net/). It is run from the Netherlands at RIPE NCC, which is building the largest Internet measurement network ever made. RIPE Atlas employs a global network of probes that measure Internet connectivity and reachability, providing an unprecedented understanding of the state of the Internet in real time. There are not many measurement probes in the U.S., so Comcast's Technology R&D Grants Fund (http://techfund.comcast.com/) is underwriting an expansion in the U.S. You of course do NOT need to use Comcast as your ISP; RIPE Atlas is measuring the Internet as a whole so any ISP is fine. If you are interested, my team at Comcast will ship you a RIPE Atlas probe for free. Just sign up at http://tinyurl.com/atlasrsvp -- while supplies last. -- JL Comcast

[CustSvc] Provisioning a new modem -- Quickest way?

Hi there, I am going to assist someone replacing a XFinity gateway with a Motorola SB6121 modem. (The XFinity is not allowing PPTP VPN connections out and from what I can see on the forums, this is a known issue with people either demanding the Arris gateway or rolling their own modem/router.) My question is: Is there a special number I should call to get the modem provisioned? Or do I just call 888-Comcast and hope they won't refuse to do it? (edit: I suppose I should say that I am being cynical with my last statement. Maybe this is no big deal. I just haven't done it in years.) Edited to add topic group category. uid://455626

[Speed] Ethernet speed vs. wireless speed - wireless slower?

Had my Xfinity installation today. Getting 28mps average download speed but only about 12mps on wireless. Is that normal? I'm using a TM822G modem and an older Netgear 11g router. How much would it help, if at all, to upgrade to a new router with 11n? The 12mps is not bad but 28mps on wireless would be even better, if it is possible with reasonable expense and effort.
