[Plan] Comcast Device Limit on WiFi

$

Can someone clarify how Comcast monitors the number of WiFi devices connected? I'm looking at two plans for Internet+TV. They are identical except that one limits devices to 5, while the other allows 11 devices. I understand how Comcast might enforce these limits if you are using their equipment, but since I have my own modem, router and WiFi, I don't see how they would enforce these limits. Thanks for any info.

[Plan] Speed boost shell game

Perhaps this has all been said before but watch out for the consequences of your "free" speed boost. At the end of last year I received the surprise bandwidth doubling like everyone else in the Chicago market. As a minimal data user with minimal needs, I really didn't care too much. So today when I make my annual promo offer expiration/renegotiation call after seeing my bill go from ~$30 to ~$90, I find out that the speed boost has a dark side - I am now considered a 60M (and up) customer. For 4 years I have been on one promo or another at 25M. My last rate was around $31 all in with both a TV box and free HBO I didn't want/use. Now I am told I can get no promos with any speed lower than the new 60M tier and the new price will be $49.96 ($54.36 w/hidden fees and $5 discount for ecobill). Basically Comcast is saying you can never downgrade service without cancelling. Of course, you know the drill from here... When I tell them all I ever needed was the 25M down tier and it's still available online around the same $30 price, I get the classic "not for existing customers" BS. In the past I heard the same thing but was always able to get them to bend. Today after 3 separate phone tries, I gave up and settled for the new crappy offer of 60M of bandwidth I don't need and won't use. I almost forgot the best part... When I continue to harp that I only want Internet, not TV, they tell me I can get just 25M down internet for the bargain price of $49.99. Gee, pay 3 cents more for half the bandwidth and no free channels I might possibly stream once in a while; where do I sign? The pricing folks at Comcast are truly idiotic. I am wondering however if I sign up for the 25M internet-only if I could then "upgrade" to one of the cheaper 25M+TV offers. Hmmm, just how much time do I want to waste? Since WOW is available for my area and are offering 100M for $49 ($39 w/2 year contract) I may just switch since free HBO/Cinemax/Streampix means very little to this cord-cutter. If I have to pay $49.xx anyway, why not just leave Comcast and come back as a new customer in 6 months? This concludes my rant for the day.

[Connectivity] Latency issues. Spikes and jitter

Ok, I have been through at least a dozen phone calls with tech support. 3 tech visits. Now I have an executive contact and the local technician supervisor as contacts. For over a month now, I've had intermittent ping spikes that fluctuate 250ms+ and T3 timeouts, in the evening, usually by 9pm. Can last for 45min, or up to 5 hours. However, all day today it's been happening. So far I've got a new line from the drop. New gateway and splitters (terminated on ends too). Only game wired. Tests are wired as well. Techs suspect it's noise from neighbors who are firing up their equipment when they get home in the evening, but it feels like nothing is getting done. I see no trucks outside monitoring the node/drops during the time frames these issues are happening. Also, I have eliminated my equipment. I do put the gateway (TG1682G) into bridge mode and use my own personal router. I have tested (wired) without my router, after factory resetting the Gateway, and it yields the same results. https://share.pingplotter.com/LFEPeYxVRBp

[Equip] Can SB6141 get new Blast speeds.

I have Blast and a SB6141 (8 bonded channels). I rebooted my modem several times, but the best download speeds I got after multiple tests are 259 Mbps. The medium test is around 251 Mbps. That’s better than the 239 Mbps I got previously, but a far cry from the 300 Mbps most are reporting. Considering I tested multiple devices including connecting directly to the modem, the limitation seems to be the modem or service. Is the SB6141 capable of the faster download speeds?

[Plan] Comcast Streaming Offering?

Did anyone with internet only call receive a $10/mo special streaming offer? It was an offer that included Cinemax, Showtime, and HBO I believe. I received the call, politely declined and told them that until Comcast resolved service issues in my area, I would not not be subscribing to any further services...funnily enough, a couple days later our road was blocked off with Comcast contractors doing work. Probably just a coincidence (either that or they were calling my bluff lol), but if they do get service working properly (for the first time in a year) I may have to take a look at that streaming package. Side Note: The past couple months they have been rewiring our entire area. A couple weeks ago they switched us over to the new wiring. It resulted in a 2 hour outage. Uncorrectables are at 0 for everything but channels 24 and 25 (D 3.1), correctables exist, but i don't believe the page has changed much, if at all since the switch over. There are still a couple T3 timeouts that happen from time to time, but I haven't noticed any actual outages. Speeds have been lower than expected though. Going to reboot/factory reset my modem later today after the wife takes the kids out of the house (they are watching YTTV) and we'll see what happens after that. Fingers crossed that things are fixed or at least improved to the point that there will be no more issues. They may have also moved us to N+0 during this upgrade, I don't know. IMHO the Gigabit upgrade was rushed in our area after Google started rolling out fiber, so I suspect they weren't prepared for that. Judging by Google's speed, I doubt they will make it here before my contract expires in 2019, but the friendly lady at the Comcast store told me to come in a couple months before expiration and they would do what they could to get me the same rate since the non promo rate is $150/mo. It also sounds like Comcast might be planning a 'true' OTT play on internet as well...which will definitely be interesting. Youtube TV serves us well, especially with the recently added channels. The only channel they are really missing is HGTV for us. I get free HBO through AT&T, so hey, it all works out. I pay $118.99 for all my streaming services + tax. That's exactly the right price IMO. Now, if AT&T and Verizon could work on those cell phone bills... To think...Google and AT&T was the cause of the majority of all this...sling and ps vue probably played a minor role as well. Also, Comcast is giving me a compelling reason NOT to switch to Google Fiber if/when it rolls out. They've drastically improved their customer service in this area. You guys don't realize, but it's very expensive to rewire an area this large. They did it to fix service issues. They have also become a lot more responsive on the phone as of late. I suspect in the end, it's going to boil down to price + features, customer service, and speeds. If they can get the last 10% of the service issues sorted out, offer a competitive streaming offering that doesn't lead to a $200/mo TV + internet bill, then I have no problem keeping them as my provider. If they can't...well Google Fiber is inching closer and closer...they may not get here until 2020, but they WILL get here. In the meantime, we are renting for now, so we do have the choice to move to another area...and AT&T is a wildcard. I've had a total of 3 coworkers tell me that AT&T rolled out fiber in their area, so they may become a factor in the future as well.

2 modems? 2 IP addresses?

My current set-up has an Arris TM602G (from Comcast), which was added to my setup when I added Voice to get full triple play. It's only for voice, as I also have a SB6121 modem which I own. Now, the Voice modem has an ethernet port which shows active, but not usable. I plugged in a laptop, see the IP address, but can't use it to connect. Now, Comcast is showing that I should update this voice modem. And I assume it will run the Xfinity WiFi. My question - If I accept this new modem, will I have access to the second IP address? If the modem is active, will it function as a second line?

I'm posting this here. Feel free to chime in if you live in the area. Periodically I will post updates. I just did a factory reset of my modem to clear out all previous issues and start fresh. This is a screenshot from around 2:20 or so. Do the signal levels look good to you guys? They look pretty good to me, considering where they've been in the past. If there are changes I will add to this post. Not going to bother with the event log since it only has provisioning info. However, I did take a screenshot of it. Oh, and DSL reports speed test: Not QUITE the speeds I am looking for, but no complaints. I will also test elsewhere. EDIT: Testing elsewhere yielded similar results. Hard to interpret. No other devices being used, but tons of devices hooked up. (1 smart phone, 2 smart TVs, both powered off. Google Home, etc.) I suspect it's more on Comcast's end though, but it's not super high priority for me, as long as they work through it. I may also purchase a new router. This one has done 945 down before, but it is an AC-68U and I've been eyeing a good quality high end netgear nighthawk....either that or build my own Pfsense box.

[Rant] Install cancelled because of mud

My sister ordered Xfinity service on 2/22 with a Install date of 2/25 between 1-3PM. The tech showed up at 1:42PM and came inside and looked around. I told him the house has no cable line from the house to the pole. He went it the back yard to look around. He comes back and tells me he needs to talk to me outside. I walk out the front door and he said he refuses to do the install. He didn't want to get his ladder dirty or the wire. I told him I'd help him because I could careless if I get dirty. He said no and he walked away. He was an ADI contractor for Xfinity. I called xfinity and bitched about this pos contractor that wouldn't do the work. So another tech is scheduled for 3-5pm. Then I found out the rep didn't place the order for the right service on 2/22. So I had to get the bundle packaged fixed to what my sister wanted. Now the install time was cancelled because of the changes. Have to comeout another day.

This topic has been re-titled and will become the side discussion to include the new Blast Pro 250/10 tier rollout. The reports for actual receipt of these tiers are here: https://www.dslreports.com/forum/r31777264-Speed-Report-Performance-Pro-150-5-Blast-Pro-250-10-Here uid://455626 I had to reboot my modem today due troubleshoot a pfsense NIC failure and after the reboot, my speed tests are now showing 300mbps. They were only 240mbps yesterday. Upload is still showing on 12mbps. This is on a Blast Pro plan, modem SB6183, location: Colorado Springs. http://speedtest.xfinity.com/results/JBY817KP3NL5AMW [att=1] Did I miss a speed increase announement? Anyone else seeing this?

[Equip] Separate Modem, EMTA, Router Possible?

I've read and searched and read some more, and my head is spinning. (I would have written this in another recent post but didn't want to hijack...) Please help me sort through this. :-) After years of double play (because I don't believe in having all my eggs in one basket) I'm likely going triple play since it's not possible to just cancel the premium channels and/or pick/choose smaller cable TV packages, I'd lose almost everything without much cost savings. With triple play, my xfinity cost stays the same, and I'll "save" the cost of the landline. I'm not thrilled, but with the landline company just being sold to another, maybe it's time. Present modem is SB 6183 (I'm getting all channels, 16 down and 4 up) Router is Apple Airport Extreme, 4th Gen (dual band, a/b/g/n) Computers are Apple, there are Rokus, ereaders, tablets, etc - lots of wifi use The router is (getting) old, but it works great. As does the modem. I have Blast (200/10) and typically get mid-high 200s in speed tests. I don't like putting all my eggs in one technology device, I prefer being able to replace/upgrade as needed. The Arris TM822 is a definite step backwards from the SB6183. The Arris SVG2482-AC is a step forward (both router and modem) but it's all-in-one. And Docsis 3.0 (Vermont is usually last to get improvements, so I don't expect we will see 3.1 anytime soon, but...) From other posts, it looks like others agree about keeping it all separate, but how do I do that? Is there a way to use my present router and modem, and just add the telephony part of the TM822 (or similar)? How? Or for ~$100 more, am I better off getting the SVG2482 because of the (NEWER! BETTER?!?!) router and modem parts? Thank you for any help and advice! (And thank you for all the info throughout the site!)

I purchased a ARRIS Surfboard Model SVG2482AC for internet, Wi-Fi, and Voice Modem. The Internet and WiFi work via Comcast/Infinity. But the voice/telephone service does not work. A Comcast service tech came out to help with provision to activate voice phone service because the ARRIS Modem says it's certified to work with all Comcast services. Still not dial tone - Please help and thanks

Haven't seen anything posted about it yet; pretty cool access for the average non tech savvy user to manage the home wifi. Have to have a XB3 or XB6 though XFINITY xFi by Comcast https://appsto.re/us/nLOqgb.i http://www.xfinity.com/myxfi

Causes of constant latency at night?

Past 5 weeks now, experiencing very high latency at night, generally starts 8pm, ends couple hrs later. I have a tech supervisor that is really trying to help me; have been in routine communication too. Posting to get some feedback about common causes. SB8200 modem Netduma router, all wired. https://share.pingplotter.com/6WEiP9JeDkh Crews have been out putting filters on homes near me, trying to clean the line up. Honestly, it has cleaned up the line during all hours except around 8pm. Current levels; sorry, didn't think to look at specs during ping spikes. Will tonight.

[Speed] MB8600 with additional ip.

Does anyone here have the MB8600 with the blast tier and an additional ip? I subscribed to gigabit and have lost it twice. The gigabit modem file was correct for the additional ip on gigabit but I lost the tier overnight. It reverted to d11_m_mb8600_speedtierextreme2_c01.cm. My gigabit file ended with c05 and so did the performance tier I had before. I'm about to give up on gigabit and go to the blast tier. There doesn't seem to be a proper config file for the MB8600 with an additional ip on the blast tier.

Playing the Xfinity New Customer game.

For those existing customers who are looking to qualify for a New Customer offer, let me say I called Xfinity a few times and they absolutely wouldn't give me a discount for my plan that was going from $40 to $60 a month. I really just wanted their new customer deal for $25 a month (less $5 a month for autopay) for 25 Mbps. That's all I needed, and that's all I wanted. They refused to budge. Nope, it will be $50 for the same 25 mbps because I am an existing customer. I cancelled and returned the equipment and the account was closed. The next day I became eligible for the New Customer discounts. So that is their new policy in Florida. No discounts until you close your account and then wait 1 day and you are a new customer again.

[Equip] Netgear CM500V discontinued? And are Amazon Warehouse modems OK?

$

Hi, Switching to Comcast triple play after years on FiOS. Was thinking of buying a Netgear CM500V since I need a voice modem, but I can't find it anywhere. Has this modem been discontinued? It seems for a pure voice modem the only other option is the older 8x4 units. Second question -- I have read on here not to buy used EMTA modems. Does that apply to Amazon Warehouse deals? I can't see paying full price for an 822 modem, but $70 for an Amazon Warehouse one is reasonable (and I could buy a 3.1 modem later and keep the 822 for just the phone). FYI, I did the triple play deal with the 200 Mbps Blast internet. Moving from FiOS 50/50 so I will miss some upstream capability but the downstream should more than make up for it.

youtube upload problem (throttling?)

I have gigabit service, speedtest usually around 950 down 40 up. I tried uploading files to some web hosting services and everything is fine, upload almost maxes up at 40 and I can still use internet (open pages, watching videos). But when I try to upload to youtube first is upload doesnt use all 40, it uses around 2.5 and second that my internet on all devices slows down to a crawl, it takes like 30 seconds to load a webpage, its like Im using all my bandwidth and my channel is full. So is comcast throttling my youtube upload or whats going on?
