[Connectivity] Random ~5s connection drops

$

I'm having a problem where my connection will intermittently stop working for about 5 seconds. It seems to only be my outbound dropping while my inbound is unaffected. The only thing I have that supports this claim is when I'm on Skype, I can hear everything fine while nobody can hear me and my connection in game drops for the 5s. My modem never actually drops when this issue occurs. I don't know how to actually test if the inbound in unaffected in the 5s, I would be glad to if there is a way/it would narrow the problem. I used to have an issue for YEARS where my modem would completely disconnect for a while before reconnecting (this problem was never actually fixed it just sort of stopped happening). So this is an improvement, I guess? Modem: SB5100 Signal Levels: Down -- Frequency: 681000000 Hz Locked -- Signal to Noise Ratio: 39 dB -- Power Level: 0 dBmV Up -- Channel ID: 4 -- Frequency: 36200000 Hz Ranged -- Power Level: 36 dBmV This is a small bit of the log on the modem, the times are not correct I have no idea how to correct it. 1970-01-01 00:00:14 3-Critical D003.0 DHCP WARNING - Non-critical field invalid in response. 1970-01-01 02:10:00 3-Critical T002.0 SYNC Timing Synchronization failure - Failed to acquire FEC framing 1970-01-01 02:09:57 3-Critical T001.0 SYNC Timing Synchronization failure - Failed to acquire QAM/QPSK symbol timing The bottom 2 errors are then spammed till it doesn't record anymore due to the log being full. I have a technician coming out tomorrow but have absolutely no faith in them fixing it. When I had the intermittent connection problems that were dropping the modem, I had them come out several times, charge me, and then leave me with a broken service. Anything I can do to troubleshoot this myself?

Physically at modem to reconnect?

I work away from my unattended office quite often. After extended power failures at that office (or Charter "reset" IPs?), I can no longer remotely connect to my home servers. The cable modem can't get an IP, etc. I can remotely power cycle my cable modem and router via the phone line to restore the connection. However, lately this alone doesn't work. Someone physically needs be at my office to disconnect and reconnect the incoming Charter cable line from the Charter cable modem. So, unless that's done, I'm out of luck connecting remotely until I get back to the office. I have a Motorola Surfboard model SB6121 Charter cable modem and a D-Link DIR-655 router. I also have a similar situation with Cox Cable at an unattended office in Phoenix. Recycling the power to the cable modem and router has always worked there. My questions - (1) Is there some other cable modem/router combination that would automatically and reliably restore the connection (without disconnecting/reconnection the cable wire) after an extended power failure (or IP change, etc)? (2) Any other suggestions (besides sending someone to my office to disconnect/reconnect the cable from the modem)? (3) Why would recycling the modem/router power work for Cox and not for Charter? Thanks, Pat

Buying a DOCSIS 3 modem

Any suggestions as to what to buy or avoid from Comcast's approved list? I don't need wi-fi or any other features, I have a router. The only must have is being able to connect to the admin interface through the router, like I was able to do with the old Motorola modem that Comcast gave me first.

[WiFi] Xbox One Service Advisory

Comcast and Microsoft are aware of a software issue affecting the ability of Xbox One users to play some games online. This issue is only observed when the Xbox One is connected to a network via WiFi and when that network also has an IPv6 address. In those conditions online gameplay for some titles may not work. To immediately solve this issue, we recommend that customers connect their Xbox One using an Ethernet cable instead of WiFi. Comcast and Microsoft are working together to further diagnose the issue and we anticipate that Microsoft will release a software update after the holidays that will resolve this issue. -- JL Comcast

[Connectivity] EPL over Coax?

Anyone know if Comcast can run an EPL (Ethernet Private Line) over Coax? one of our tenants wanted to get MetroE, we had fiber ran dedicated to our business only, Comcast will not run a second fiber line into the building so they said they'd do a coax line... which seems odd since I didn't think Comcast did metroE at all over coax... is their survey person wrong? we were told if we wanted metroe we had to go enterprise and enterprise is 100% fiber. Of which we already had installed and terminated... so now we are holding up the next tenant Edited to add topic group category. uid://455626

The "Internet Plus" package is only available for "New Subscribers". I'm happy to lie, or do whatever it takes to get fair service from my local monopoly*. What's the easiest way? Do I have to my sell my home to my son's girlfriend? What's the trick? *I know, it's not a monopoly, technically.

bridge ethernet network to new SMCD3GNV via wireless?

$

I have an existing PC network served via Sagemcom F@ST1704 ADSL gateway router. Although all devices are connected via ethernet, this router also has wireless B/G capabilities. We no longer wish to receive internet connection via ADSL, but don't want to buy wireless cards for the PCs, and instead and would like to connect this wired network to a new SMCD3GNV cable modem (provided by our new Comcast HSI service) via wireless link. The F@ST1704 seems to support bridge mode, in that it is able to scan MAC addresses of remote bridges, but can't see the SMCD3GNV, leading me to suspect that wireless bridge mode is not enabled on the cable modem. Can somehow tell me if making the connection between these networks as described above is possible with these devices, and if so how to enable bridge mode on the cable modem?

[Connectivity] I hate cold weather

I hate it when the temperature gets near 0. I always run into upstream issues. Connection goes dead, but I can see the link light still blinking as normal for awhile. Then it goes into a reconnect, but sits at upstream blinking for about 5 minutes. I've had this issue for several years and several different modems. It's especially bad this year with the unusually cold weather. Upstream signals are all normal, around 41-42. Just got statics for Bus Class. Question about IP's for Netgear

Hi All, I just received my 5 ips from Comcast. Is there a workaround for the netgear portion? can I use the existing wan ip on the smc side and drop those ips in there instead? if possible which ip am I looking for? I see there is WAN dhcp gateway, WAN internet ip, WAN dhcp ip. I am confused on what I am suppose to use? I hate to use one of my existing 5 ips just for the router itself.

Just curious who here actually purchased an eMTA (not from best buy since they no longer sell them for Comcast) and had it activated successfully. Also, where did you purchase it from?

iPhone/iPad won't connect after changing settings

My neighbor's ComCast modem broke and they sent her a new one in the mail, an Xfinity TC8305C. I set it up for her and we got connected just fine. We then connected her iPhone then her iPad to the new WiFi network: all fine. I went into the router settings and kept the name of the WiFi network but changed the password from a _very_ long, difficult to remember one to one that was 14 digits long, strong, but much easier to remember. Saved the changes, went to the iPhone and iPad which found the network, but returned: Unable to join the network xxxxx. Dismiss. Can anyone see some step that I missed? Should I try renaming BOTH the network name and the password and see if that would work? I have been able to do this with no problem on my Verizon Actiontec modem/router, but can't seem to make it work on the Xfinity. Many thanks and Happy New Year.

Xfinity modem setup & packet loss

The tech setup an Xfinity modem while I was at work. I think he set it up with the built in router enabled, during a support call I was told that the modem has router capabilities. The problem I'm having is that I have high packet loss inbound and outbound. A strange symptom is that after rebooting the modem I will see an Xfinity error page when trying to reach websites that need a DNS lookup until a minute after reboot is complete. Another issue is that the remote techs could reboot the modem, but the modem won't reply to any informational queries. Does anyone have any ideas as to what may be going on? I'd like to give the tech hints when he comes back, as he didn't do a very good job the first time and I'd like to get this solved as quickly as possible.

[Speed] Starting to Stream Videos, DSL limits are too low, what plan?

Hello, I am new here and I am happy to have joined the forum. I hope that I have posted this in the right section. I recently started using YouTube to help people with How To's as well as stream video content live. I am severely limited due to the fact that I cam currently on CenturyLink DSL 20mbps service. The upload is roughly 0.80mbps and I can not stream anything that doesn't look like moving blocks. Since it is Christmas day and no one is available to speak to at CL, I figured that I could seek some assistance here. I live in Clinton, UT 84015 and I figure that I would need at least 5mbps but would like to have 10+. I am not in need of anything past 20mb as I do not download a whole lot. Does anyone have a suggestion as to which service to switch to that would allow a lot of upload speed. I am also in need of someone that will not cap my uploads due to the fact that I will be streaming 4 days out of the week. The last time I was with Comcast, the service would drop daily. Sometimes for an hour or more and mostly for 10 minutes every 6 hours or so. Recently, with CL I have had major issues with watching anything streaming like YouTube on any device or computer. It will play roughly 5 seconds of video, then buffer for about 15 seconds then play another 5 seconds. It has gotten to be too much. The neighborhood is roughly 9 years old. I currently have Comcast TV, but that is a bit much at 130 bucks a month, so I may just turn that off and use Roku with Hulu and Netflix instead. Any suggestions on deals or plans will be helpful too. Thank you so much in advance.

[Speed] Pay for performance hsi but account shows starter performance

I have Digital Preferred + Performance HSI. Comcast Customer Service says I have Performance, but on the Comcast Account page it says I have Starter Performance. Customer Service does not know what do to do so they had be talk to Technical Support. Technical Support had me reset my router, asked about surge protectors, etc. None of this has changed my Account page from saying Starter. Nothing on my side has changed and this started occurring the first of the month, the same time the 300 cap went into affect. I really do not know what the wiring or setup on my side would have to do with my Account page showing starter. I pay for performance, but only get starter. [IPv6] Home network addressing with IPv6 and Comcast? NAT?

$
0

Hey guys, I've got a question about how addressing within my home network can be handled with IPv6 service from Comcast. It is live in my area and my CM supports it (Motorola SB6140). In my mind there seems to be a dilemma and I'm wondering if I am simply overlooking something. My network is a bit strange for a "home" network but please bear with me -- I love the flexibility and learning experience it provides. Currently I have my cable modem connected to a Cisco 2911 router with DHCP and NAT overloading configured. The 2911 is connected to a Cisco 2960G gigabit switch, which has two computers connected, both on the same VLAN and with static IPs. I also have a Linksys E3000 router connected to the switch on another VLAN, which I use for my Wi-Fi and also connect my printer to via Ethernet with DHCP. RIP routing is configured between the E3000 and the 2911, and both VLANs are trunked (via 802.1Q) on the connection from the 2960 to the 2911. All of this is behind the NAT I first described, so it's all in the private IP address space. How does Comcast provide its IPv6 service? Only through DHCP or SLAAC for a residential connection? Since NAT is rendered pretty useless with IPv6, do all connected devices just get dished out global IPs dynamically? And in that case, wouldn't that make it impossible for me to have more than a single VLAN or to statically assign IPs to any of my devices? Or does Comcast provide an IPv6 range for customers to do what they want with? With the sheer size of the address space, I don't see how anything short could be reasonably justified. Am I totally missing something here? Any help or input would be greatly appreciated! :)
