FYI: Is the Comcast tech here yet? Cable giant to hire dozens as it modernizes tech dispatch By Bob Fernandez, Philadelphia Inquirer - November 18, 2016 http://www.philly.com/philly/blogs/comcast-nation/Comcast-upgrades-tech-dispatch-operations-in-South-Jersey.htmlquote:Comcast Corp. opened a new tech-dispatch facility in Voorhees on Friday for the Philadelphia area, New Jersey, and northern Delaware. The region has 2.1 million Comcast subscribers and 2,000 Comcast techs. The Philadelphia-based cable giant, which has been seeking to pull its customer-satisfaction ratings out of the dumps, expects to hire dozens of employees at the "communications operations" center, which has capacity for 350 employee seats, said spokeswoman Jennifer Bilotta. According to Comcast, 150 employees had worked in Voorhees in tech dispatch. So far, Comcast has hired 65 new employees for the facility and relocated 50 from an operation in Aston, Delaware County. With the refurbished 42,000-square-foot facility, tech-dispatch employees can coordinate and assist van-driving repair techs in the same office complex as a 400-employee Comcast call center, Bilotta said.

[WiFi] Explain xfifnitywifi

Seriously. I never really understood how the hotspots are supposed to work. I don't think I've ever connected anything to one before. FWIW, I don't have a Comcast router or hotspot in my own home. But from what I've read I understand that anyone connecting to a hotspot is separate and any bandwidth or data used isn't supposed to affect your own connection. I have a laptop that's normally connected to my in-home wifi network. Running inSSIDer from home I can see several available "xfinitywifi" SSIDs. And I can connect the laptop to (at least) one and it works. But inSSIDer shows the security of each of these networks as "Open" and I didn't have to enter any login/password. Is that how it's supposed to work? Anyone can connect to these hotspots without any kind of login?

I keep having issues where I check my speed and its flying but pages take forever to load on all computers. Even my playstation seems slow to load. I have a feeling this is why Comcast changed from the plan I had to another with faster speeds and one year free of basic cable. I think they put me on some tiered plan where if the bandwith is needed it will then send it but i dont have it always creating a delay that is extremely noticeable. Sorry I dont know the proper terminology!!! What can I do? Thanks, Tom

[Security] Some Moto/ARRIS SB61XX modems may be vulnerable to a CSRF attack

FYI - Just saw this item on the ZDNet site: Over 135 million modems vulnerable to denial-of-service flaw By Zack Whittaker, ZDNet - April 8, 2016 http://www.zdnet.com/article/millions-of-routers-vulnerable-to-unpatched-reboot-flawquote:More than 135 million modems are said to be vulnerable to a flaw that can leave users cut off from the internet -- just by someone clicking on a trick link. The vulnerability, found in a modem used in millions of US households, can allow an attacker with access to the network to remotely reset the device, which wipes out the internet provider's settings and causing a denial-of-service attack. Every person and device on the network will permanently lose access to the internet until the modem owner contacts their internet provider. The problem lies with how a widely-used modem, the Arris Surfboard SB6141, handles authentication and cross-site requests. Arris (formerly Motorola) said that it has sold more than 135 million of the Surfboard SB6141 modems, but an Arris spokesperson disputed that the figure was "not an accurate representation" of the units impacted and that only a "subset" of Surfboard devices were affected. ...&nbsp From looking at this CERT Vulnerability Alert http://www.kb.cert.org/vuls/id/643049 and this SecurityForRealPeople.com article http://www.securityforrealpeople.com/2016/04/arris-motorola-surfboard-modem.html , the issue has been demonstrated on a SB6141 modem running firmware version SB_KOMODO-1.0.6.14-SCM01-NOSH. But, from this post back last May https://www.dslreports.com/forum/r30078716-Firmware-SB6141-Software-just-updated , SB6141 modems on Comcast's network should now be running F/W version SB_KOMODO-1.0.6.14-SCM03-NOSH (or later?). However, I don't know if this "SCM03" update of the 1.0.6.14 release is also vulnerable to this attack. &nbsp EDIT: ZDNet has now revamped their article with the latest corrections from ARRIS: Millions of Arris cable modems vulnerable to denial-of-service flaw http://www.zdnet.com/article/millions-of-routers-vulnerable-to-unpatched-reboot-flaw/quote:Updated with details from Arris and corrected throughout the story that the Surfboard device is a modem, not a router. We've also changed the headline based on shifting numbers and debate over shipments, actively used modems and potential impact.&nbsp EDIT2: I have now modified the title of this thread to make it clear that this issue is applicable to more SURFboard modem models than the SB6141.

[Caps] Impossible to switch to Unlimited Internet after the 1st?

So, like a lot of people, I just got done using my "courtesy" two months of unlimited in December. We cut the cord to switch to Netflix+AmazonPrime+PSVue back in July of last year, and average about 1.7 TB of internet monthly (there are 6 people in my family - 2 adults and 4 teens, only one being an avid online gamer, along with 4 TVs). I called today to add the "unlimited" option to my package, and they informed me that since I called after the 1st, it wouldn't go into effect until 2/1, and I would be left paying ~140 in overages this month (if I don't severely limit my family's TV / gaming / internet usage). Does anybody know of a number / website I can go to that will let me add the unlimited option to my plan for January? I think its rotten that Comcast is allowed to "tax" users who have cut the cord, trying to force them back onto their TV services.

[Speed] Machesney Park IL Comcast Speed 150 Mbps

Hello, Over the past week my internet speed has been going down as low as 50Mbps during the late evening hours (5-10pm). Checking the internet connection around 12am/1am it goes up to around 130Mbps. I used to get 160-180Mbps (hardly ever below 150). Please see below for what I have tried. - Connected PC straight to modem and modem straight to the only cable coaxial connection coming into the house. - I have a MOTO JRSB6121 I probably will have to call them when it is that low. They will probably won't to send out a technician, however I feel that it is not something they will be able to fix at my location?

[Connectivity] Intermittent connectivity loss due to "upstream noise"

$

I've been having problems with my internet for the past 6 months or so. Randomly, and on numerous instances throughout any given day and night, my internet connection will drop. Video streams freeze, gaming sessions disconnect. I've been told by comcast that the problem is on their end because of new infrastructure that needs servicing. A tech showed me a list of nodes in my area that are all not functioning properly and creating upstream noise that is disconnecting everyone using them. How is this still going on? It's literally been half a year (or more). I'm getting sick of explaining to my children that we have to wait on our internet to come back up before they can finish watching "Princess Sofia". My wife and I can't play online games because of sometimes constant, sometimes sporadic disconnects. Comcast tech support can't do anything, and calling the hotline leads to nowhere except them sending yet ANOTHER tech to come out to tell me the same thing. What are my options here? Do I just have to accept such terrible service? There are no other high speed internet providers in my area, and downgrading to ATT's dsl would require a contract, which I don't want.

[Connectivity] MoCA finally enabled

I routed my rented TG1682 Gateway to my X1 box connected Samsung smart TV via a wired Actiontec MoCA network adapter. I enabled the MoCA connection on the TG1682 but it would automatically disconnect after a day or two. Chats and telephone conversations with Comcast regarding this issue did not solve the problem. A posting on DSLReports Direct Xfinity/Comcast got results. Evidently the TG1682 Gateway MoCA connection must be "whitelisted" with Xfinity in order to remain enabled. This was accomplished by ComcastGeno and my MoCA connection is now permanently connected and working flawlessly. Why does Comcast make it so difficult to enable MoCA on their Gateways?

Hello, in my house there is already a comcast connection with a Xfinity modem/router. Yesterday I attached a third party brand cable modem and it works. I got an ip address. Mod Note: This topic started as "XI Gigabit DOCSIS 3.1 - data cap with 3-year agreement?" It has become a general discussion of this deployment, hence the title change. uid://455626 If you actually have had this service installed, the stickied report topic is here. > https://www.dslreports.com/forum/r30960001-Speed-Report-DOCSIS-3-1-Gigabit-Service-Here If you report, please include info requested in the first post and keep that topic strictly on topic. Thanks, sortofageek The XI Gigabit DOCSIS 3.1 is now available in my area. I am tempted to sign up. Early reports said unlimited data with a 3-year agreement. The Comcast website says nothing but the typical disclaimer about the data usage plan. I don't want to sign a 3-year agreement for a plan with a data cap. Does anyone know if the XI Gigabit service is subject to the data usage nonsense? [Equip] Retail Arris TM822G(eMTA) Now Available on Amazon(edit: pending)

Not sure if this has been posted already, but figured I would mention it for those who weren't aware. EDIT: It appears that this was put up prematurely by Amazon based on later posts. It seems that the retail Arris TM822G Comcast 'kit' is now available on Amazon for the price of $149.99 compared to the gateway(TG862) version for $199.99 . https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01KVOKVYY/ It seems like it became available on the 9th or so. The box includes - - TM822G - One short and one long coax cable - Ethernet cable - Power cord - 2 way splitter You don't seem to get the battery included. There is currently only one TM822G listed on the approved list at the moment(A.K.A. no 'retail' version listed), so it may cause some problems. Edit: See page 3, it is now approved for retail purchase. It doesn't seem like there are any other higher spec retail eMTA devices at the moment sold by Amazon for Comcast, sadly(unless I missed it). In other news, there is also a new 32x8 AC1750(no voice) Arris SBG7580AC gateway available as well for $229.99 . It is currently pending approval on Comcast. https://www.amazon.com/SURFboard-SBG7580AC-Docsis-AC1750-Router/dp/B01KW9T39C

[Connectivity] Latency issues affecting VOIP

Hi, I am having major issues with my VOIP. Both incoming and outgoing calls are effected the same, the voice of the person I am speaking with is clear with zero missed words while my voice for the other side is losing words every 10 seconds or so. I've been told it sounds like I am randomly applying the mute button. Ive run some trace routes and while I am trying to get a crash course in how to decipher these, your help will be greatly appreciated. Is my issue with Comcast or the Level 3 peer? [E-mail] POP3 support

$

I've been using POP to check my Comcast email for almost 3 years with no problem; it's the simplest way to just get a notification ("Your bill is ready" and "Thank you for your payment") and get a permanent copy of the messages. Starting this month, though, I've been getting no new messages (no errors in my client) even though they're in my inbox (unread) if I check my Comcast email via their web interface. As much as they now push you to use IMAP instead of POP, they say (in their email help pages) that they still support POP (and my settings match their specified settings). Does anyone else use POP and find it's no longer POP-ing? Or, if it is still working, then which client/app are you using? Since I don't want to use [IMAP for] Comcast email, I looked around to see what other methods are available... found the Xfinity Connect app for email and other stuff and installed it on my chromebook--works simply enough. So I guess I'll use it till I can (hopefully) get POP working again.

[Signals] Signal Levels Different than Usual

Lately I've noticed that our downstream level is higher than usual. I see that it is still in spec but is this cause for concern? During the day most downstream levels are at around 5 dBmV. Another thing that is unusual are our upstream levels. We are usually at around 47 dBmV. Drop is almost 9 years old now but has been modified by techs. Please see https://www.dslreports.com/forum/r30478196-Connectivity-Is-this-drop-okay Could that connector be causing it? Inside coax is all fairly recent and uses quality connectors. The oldest run is probably from 2006 or 2007. Only one splitter. I was told that there was a Comcast van here a few days ago (perhaps hooking up a drop or something). Thanks in advance!
