I've starting having some weird issues lately. As I posted elsewhere, my upstream signal levels dropped suddenly during some hot weather. Since then, I've noticed some problems copying TO sites, and the Visualware quality test shows lost/retransmitted packets. In particular, copying to work computers through my VPN is slow (3-6M/min versus 30+M/min), and I'm getting occasional lost packets. My router's Ethernet light for the computer blinks almost normal, so I think there is alot of retransmission. Another nearby co-worker, also with Comcast, has no problems (but is running 50/10 Blast! on a D2 eMTA!) I originally blamed the work VPN (connected to a Time Warner Cable cable modem) as we went through this before and it was genuinely at their end, but then both of us saw problems.
I'd like to get the uSNR level, but would like to know the best way to ask? The direct forum is dead, and calling them just gets you some outsourced script kiddie that knows nothing. I have seen these occasional slowdown before, but was never sure if it was me or work. They sometimes cleared up after a few days on their own.
What is a bit weird is that regular speed tests don't seem to be affected much or at all. Do they use UDP instead of TCP?
