I'm currently on a 105/10 Blast plan with Voice service, and am renting an Arris TM822G modem, which seems to be working well (I originally had a TM722G, but swapped it out at the local service center a few weeks ago). I have an ASUS RT-N66U router that I plan to continue using regardless of which modem I have.
With the bump in rental fee to $10 next year, I'm strongly considering the purchase route. The rep at the service center said it was allowed in my area.
Since I plan to use my own router, I'd prefer just a modem/eMTA and not a gateway, but I also want to avoid activation/rental billing hassles, and shorten the payback period as much as possible.
With the TM822G not "officially" a retail unit, it seems hard to find a reputable vendor. Basically, 3rd party sellers on Amazon listing 'new' items seem like the only option, but they are around $180+.
The official TM862 Xfinity retail device is currently $174 and change on Amazon (discounted from $199), making it slightly cheaper than the TM822. From what I've read, people don't seem to love this device; but perhaps in bridge mode it will be just as solid as a TM822?
Or, should I go the SB6183 route (16x4 for a little future proofing), with a separate eMTA for voice (not even sure what models to look at for this)?
Thoughts/recommendations on hardware combinations and reputable sellers would be appreciated!
