Anyone have or had issues with a Cisco dpc3008?

Specifically this is a friend's modem, but I was over at his place troubleshooting his connection today and when you download something, the download speed would ramp up to 50+mbps and then plummet to nothing. I then look at the modem and notice it's completely off. Like the download speed crashed it. Looking further, I notice (and this is a pretty new install since he moved into this apartment about a month ago) that the power adapter is of Linksys brand (a former division of cisco) but both have a rating of 12v 1A output/input so I didn't know if it was the difference of proper power adapter (and device it's used on. Router vs modem) or the modem itself that is the issue. I told him to just take it into a service center to get it swapped out since he's renting the thing and it should be a free swap, but I was asking as to what could actually cause a modem to ramp up and then crash? His signal stats were fine (0-1+db downstream, 43-45db upstream, snr 40-41db) but I almost laughed when I saw it happen. I didn't realize modem's could take much power when transmitting data.
