[Install] New install with Netgear CM1200 with Comcast 1GB service - signa

I just installed Comcast 1GB internet service using my own modem in a new home. The equipment is the same I used in my former home with 1GB service, a Netgear CM1200 modem. The speeds seem fine so far (about 5 days so far). But today I checked the signals on the CM1200, and I saw some things I had not seen before.  First on the Downstream Bonded channels - 3 channels have very high correctible and unocrrectible errors. Second, the power levels are all around 0 - I am used to seeing them around 3-4 dBmV. SNR looks good though. Is there any action I should take on this, are there any issues? (picture 1 above) Second - on the Upstream Bonded Channels, at my old house power is around 37-38 dBmV. Here, they are 51-52 dBmV. Is this ok? (picture 2 above)   Last, on the Downstream OFDM channels - power is also around 0, in my old house it's around 2.9 dBmV. Is this ok? (picture 3 above) The new house is in a large city, the old house is in the suburbs. Maybe the new house is closer to Comcast equipment, so power doesn't need to be as high as the SNRs are pretty good? Thanks for taking a look at this and advising me!

Fiber coming down my street!

8/13/2020 so... i saw a truck outside with communications labeled on it, and i noticed they were working on the box behind the amplifier next to my house, so i asked the guys what they were doing, they are pulling strings to pull fiber through the neighborhood! right now its just the thick rope, they are using a fish tape and a large air compressor to push it through the conduits. they told me tomorrow they will use those ropes to pull fiber though, and they have 5000 feet to do. i asked them if they will take out the old coax, and they basically said it will get abandoned. they are not the ones doing the fiber splicing, so maybe the fiber gets pulled, and just gets left alone for a while. so i figured id just start my own thread to track (or not track) how long it takes to get what i assume will be rphy eventually. assuming the signals will get better (snr) when they do finally do upgrades, but we shall see. RG11 vs RG6

So from what i've read, RG11 cable is thicker, and preserves signal better over longer distances. My question is, if I were to replace some of the internal house wiring with RG11 (this particular run is quite long), are the connectors on the ends of the cable the same size as RG6 and would fit into the back of my cable modem? Like wouldn't the center core of the coax be thicker on the RG11, or are they the same?

MoCA Adapter

If I have the newest X1 Gateway and am trying to use and coax connection in a bedroom to create an ethernet connection do I need one or two MoCA adapters? I've read yes & no so want to be sure. My house is 9 years old, so everything sorta new.

[Equip] Motorola MB8600 vs MB8611

I have been using a MB8600 modem for a couple of years with no real problems. Speeds and levels always good. I see the MB8611has been released and wondering if I should upgrade to that. I am on the 500/15 tier and have no plans on going to the gig tier. Gift cards on Amazon make the money a no issue. Thanks.

Comcast refuses to push the latest(deployed) firmware to router

I have a Netgear C6300BD(AC1900) router/modem combo. I'm signed up for the 400mb internet package. As of right now I'm only getting 115mbps down and 20up when I test with a wired connection, WIFI is like 85 down and 15 up. Pathetic. Also there are some signal loss issues. I took a look and noticed that the firmware currently running on the router is MANY iterations behind the latest release, and an entire generation behind what even Comcast says it has deployed. I'm currently running firmware version: 2.01.08 Comcast claims it has deployed version: 3.01.12 I've spent hours on the phone with NetGear who claim they only develop the firmware then send it to the ISP(Comcast) for testing and verification. When I bring this to Comcast over MULTIPLE calls all I get is the same reset/power cycle BS runaround that obviously isn't gonna just magically push this firmware update. I've tried to get one of the reps to transfer me to tier 2 or tier 3 support, but those call center workers in the Phillipines have no clue, bless their hearts. Anyhow, I'm here hoping someone with the ability to help reads this and get back to me.

Slow Upload? Are my PowerLevels ok?

Hey Guys, I've noticed this past weekend, we've been getting lower upload speed than normal. We've always got our full speed, but just this past weekend, we've been only getting between 4mbps-12mbps upload. Our download speed doesn't appear to be affected. It has been colder than normal in Illinois, below zero over the weekend, so I'm wondering if that's playing a role. Any input would be appreciated. Speedtest by Ookla Server: SBA Edge - West Chicago, IL (id = 33629) ISP: Comcast Cable Latency: 13.54 ms (3.58 ms jitter) Download: 703.41 Mbps (data used: 783.8 MB) Upload: 14.79 Mbps (data used: 13.7 MB) Packet Loss: 0.0% I rebooted our modem about 3 times and finally got around 18mbps, but it's still fluctuating between 12-18mbps as of today. Speed Tier: 600mbps Max Down: 720 mbps Max Up: 24 mbps Cable Modem HW Version: 2.0 Vendor: Technicolor BOOT Version: S1TC-3.63.20.104 Core Version: 1.0 Model: CGM4331COM Product Type: XB7

My SB6190 just died. I have Xfinity extreme pro. Can I buy SB6183 with my tier or should I buy 3.1 docsis, with all the problems with SB6190 I'm reading. I don't want to buy the 6190 again. Thanks

[Equip] What is the go-to cable modem these days?

I'm still using an Arris 6141 (which replaced my venerable 6120), but now that my Blast service supposedly goes to 400 Mbps d/l (but probably still 10 Mbps u/l lol) it's getting long in the tooth. What is the new reliable workhorse modem that I should be looking at? Caveat: when my cable TV+internet deal is up later this year I may go to CenturyLink Gigabit fiber if I decide to cord-cut, because my TiVo Premiere will be 11 years old and may die soon. In that case I gather that Comcast won't sell you straight internet without tacking on a "because they can" "customer without TV service" charge beyond what you normally pay when it's a package like Double Play. Gotta make up that "broadcast TV fee" and "regional sports fee" somehow, right? How does the Netgear CM1100 hold up? It has "Two (2) Gigabit Ethernet ports with link aggregation support." What is that last thing about? Does it mean that it can theoretically go up to 2 Gbps? I can get that one at Costco for 150 bucks (about 20 below full retail).

[Connectivity] pandemic relief finally

contrary to the NCTA's propaganda I've seen the degradation in my connection during the pandemic. last night there was some scheduled maintenance(node split I'm guessing?) and things are looking better. still looking for that low latency DOCSIS though...

[Price] What is the ballpark pricing for xFinity Gigabit, anyway?

$

...and is it over the same cable that provides "regular" cable internet and TV? (obviously my modem would need an upgrade--see my other recent post) Asking because CenturyLink offers Gigabit Fiber internet for $65/month in my neighborhood, and I wonder if Comcast xFinity even bothers trying to compete on price for internet-only. I realize that in any case, the upload speed would not come close to that of the CenturyLink offering, and it would almost certainly have a bandwidth cap.

PSA: xFi downtime bug causes times to be considered GMT

Just found the reason why as of yesterday my profiles were being blocked for some unknown reason. Turns out, with some update they pushed yesterday, the times entered for a profile's downtime schedules are in GMT and NOT your local timezone. As a workaround, adjust your start/stop times to accommodate your offset from GMT and it'll be back to normal. Annoying, but only thing that'll fix it until they fix this xFi software bug. I have an XB7, not sure if it affects other devices.

Does Comcast mark their underground cables?

I have an underground hardline cable feeding a pedestal, as well as a drop cable, on my property. Does Comcast normally mark their cables when requested via the state (Michigan) digging notification service? If not, how do I convince them to do it?

Comcast to AT&T Plex Streaming Reliability?

$

I just moved into a building that only has service from Comcast. Previously I had Sonic VDSL2 service 110/60. For years I've run a Plex server. One friend has AT&T 1000/1000 fiber and they'd stream 20Mbps 1080p videos from my Plex server without buffering. Now that I'm on Comcast 1000/35, even with nothing else happening on the network, it seems to struggle to provide a reliable stream to the AT&T connection. Have others noticed a choke point in the peering between Comcast and AT&T? Or is the paltry Comcast upload just not enough for what I was doing on my VDSL connection?

I can't see my Data Usage anymore

I used to be able to see my monthly Data Usage automatically when I clicked onto Manage Internet, 3 months or so used to show up with an option to view previous months Data Usage, now nothing is showing. Now there is something I can click onto that says View Data Usage but when I click onto it nothing happens.

MB8600 exhibiting IPv4 connectivity issues after firmware update

$

I have read the few threads on this forum from 2018 about the MB8600's IPv4 stack dying out after some time, and did not see any firm resolution given on the matter. We have had an MB8600 in use since April 2020 and it worked without trouble until this January. I noticed one day that the modem reset and has firmware 8600-19.3.15 / Prod_19.3_d31 from Comcast. Since the time of that reset, the modem has been unstable, exhibiting issues very much like what was previously described. I run a Ubiquiti router and route both IPv4 and IPv6 and when the modem gets into the bad state, only IPv6 continues to work. Like some other folks experiencing this trouble, the only way to solve it is to restart the modem. I cannot connect to the modem's web interface. Could the firmware update be responsible for this, or was it possibly an unrelated trigger (modem reset) that brought a latent problem to life?

IPv6 not working on VLANs

$

So I just got a Cisco RV345 router, with a Netgear R7000 acting as the WI-FI AP. When everything is running on one VLAN, IPv6 works just fine, but once I put the AP on its own VLAN it doesn't. Currently, Comcast is giving me a v6 address with a /64 prefix. I know that if I want IPv6 to work I need at least a prefix size of /60, but there doesn't appear to be a setting to give a prefix hint. There's a button to enable DHCP-PD and assign it a name, though. So, is Comcast just not giving out /64 prefixes to residential customers anymore or is the router not able to give prefix hints?

Performance starter

I'm in the Boston market and Performance starter is $49.95. I can't find the speed for this level. It used to be 10Mbs but I heard it is now 25Mbps. Does anyone know? 25 is enough for me these days. I would have gone to this in the past but it had a cap. Now that all tiers have a cap I want to try this. Can I use my own modem on this tier? Thanks
