Quick summary: I have purchased a Arris TM822G from ownyourcablemodem.com (yes I read mixed reviews -- granted). The idea is a Christmas gift for family that has Xfinity HSI/VoIP, that is running on one of the Docsis 2 rented eMTAs. Upgrade to current equip + dump the monthly fee.
Now, since I have read some mixed reviews on ownyourcablemodem.com (or related sites), should I open the modem when it arrives & try to activate it on my own Xfinity HSI service first, to verify it works and activates? Or should I leave it in the packaging, and wait to activate it until Christmas at its new home?
The TM822G is on the approved modem list, and ownyourcablemodem.com claims it is brand new, in box. They had used ones listed, but I'm not touching a used Docsis modem unless it is a rental unit provided by Comcast
