[Equip] In Defense Of the Much Maligned Arris TG862 Modem

I have been accused - perhaps unfairly - of being a Comcast apologist. But that is nothing compared to the insults that have been hurled against this Gateway. Anyway - I wanted to give a review of this modem. Which I rent from Comcast. I got my first perhaps 4 years or so ago. Used it for wired internet. And wifi at low speeds along a pretty far distance (70 feet or so) for low level computer internet tasks. Never had a problem. I added voice to our first unit a little over a year ago - and the voice worked great too. About a year ago - I got into wifi video streaming. And also upgraded to 105 service. Which revealed this modem's limitations. Its effective wifi range for most streaming applications is about 50 feet (with the 105 service - I get 50-100 mbps down at about 25-50 feet - which is great - but its wifi signal isn't enough to stream wifi tv consistently at 70-80+ feet). Note that my father has the same modem we have - in a relatively small apartment - and it works great powering a wifi Roku box at about 20 feet from modem to Roku box. We're on our second box now - only because I thought the wifi signal in our first box was broken when it didn't work like I wanted it to work. It wasn't broken. It just can't transmit a great high speed signal 70+ feet or more. There is something to be said for buying a modem - and something to be said for renting. The "breakeven" time when it comes to buying versus renting this modem is about 2 years. I think this modem is trustworthy - and can last a lot longer than 2 years. OTOH - if you get a bad one - maybe it won't. Also - who knows what will be "state of the art" 2 years from now? Is this the best/latest/greatest for every user? No. But it might suit the needs of many. Robyn
