I've been a light to moderate user (just YouTube, web surfing, and E-Mail) but then we got an Apple TV and started entertaining Grandma with Netflix and our usage started soaring. Despite them claiming that they've suspended the 250 GB cap I'm wondering if this is cause for alarm. I'm wondering if I'll hear anything from them with the surge in usage.

[Equip] XB3 2 AKA WIRELESS GATEWAY 3 AKA DPC3941T...
for those who got one already, how did you get it? Getting the xb3 was nightmare last time. They sent me 3 wireless gateway ones, 2 technicians brought gateway 1's, until finally the 3rd technician brought me an xb3.
Im assuming this will have to be self installed because if i order one they'll probably send me another wireless gateway 1 lol.

[CustSvc] Do service centers carry none wifi emta anymore?
I chatted with comcast and found out aris 722 maxes out at 130 so I cannot get the 150 speed. I really don't feel like having another bozo authorized tech out to my house. The last two authorized techs refused to test my alarm (they replaced the touch screen) and one even demanded my xfinity password and put it on his phone instead of using the touch screen to check sensors.
Does anybody know if comcast service center give out emta's without wifi anymore? Also, has anybody had any luck removing voice from their bundle and replacing it with xfinity home? I wish the Portland market allowed me to buy my own emta

[Speed] Really slow upload speeds, not sure if it's modem or Comcast
Would appreciate if any thinks this is the modem or Comcast. I don't want to have to pay for them to come out just to say it's the modem :(
Location: Sicklerville, NJ
Problem: Download speeds are all over the place, 5Mb-30Mb, usually make it up to 30Mb. Uploads have been really slow though, .5Mb-1.5. From watching speed tests, I can see it hit maximum speed usually downloading, then the test hangs/drops off completely. Uploads never hit above 2.5Mb EXCEPT on Comcast's speedtest. All other speed tests are slow. I remote desktop into my PC at home and it's unusable now because of the slow uploads. I disconnected my router and hooked up directly to the modem, same issue, so I ruled out the router.

[Connectivity] Modem Logs
Is it normal that there are no logs available?
Modem: Cisco DPC3939
On the Troubleshooting > Logs page I can't get either System Logs or Event Logs, going back any length of time. Firewall Logs shows me two entries, both for IPv6.
Box has been online ~6 days so far. I wanted to see if there was any connection trouble as a minute ago I lost my VPN connection.
Speaking of which, when/if the Comcast link goes down, what specifically should I look for beyond the idiot lights in the front?

Getting pushed incorrect software?
I'm using an SB6120. Comcast is trying to push a config update for an SBG6580 to it, which fails. I originally signed up for Blast when it was 25/5 and received 30/8 with Powerboost so no complaints there. However, even after subsequent speed upgrades in my area, I'm still at 30/8 and I'm thinking this has to do with not being able to get config upgrades. It also looks like the firmware is fairly out of date, so I suspect Comcast is trying to push SBG6580 firmware updates to it too.
I called Comcast "tech support" and it was confirmed that I should be getting 105/20 and that the SB6120 is listed correctly in their system. The tech support person re-provisioned the modem and still after reboot it was pushed the config update for the SBG6580. The talk of configs and firmwares seemed lost on them, but they did understand I wasn't getting the speed I supposed to so the next recommendation was to delete my browser cookies. I declined to do that and was offered to send a technician out. I don't want to take time off work to meet with a technician if it's not something they can solve so I declined that too.
Does anybody know what the issue could be? And how to get it fixed? Or is this just something I'm going to have to deal with Comcast Tech Support to get solved, however long and complicated that might be?

[Install] Grounding Splitter
Hi. I've done a search but haven't been able to find a definitive answer.
Comcast ran all coax on the exterior of my house. I want to run new lines inside and get rid of the mess outside. In order to do this, I am going bring the cable directly into my attic from the pole. From there (about 8' from where it will penetrate the house) it will go into a 4-way splitter, then to modem, tv, etc.
My question is: I know it needs to be grounded once it enters the house (it's already grounded at the pole). Can I run a ground from that screw on the splitter to the ground on a nearby 3-prong receptacle/outlet?
There is an electrical sub-panel nearby, and I suppose I could run a copper wire from the splitter down the access hole in the attic (where the main cable for that panel comes in) and attach to the ground bar. However, panel work always makes me nervous since I don't know much about electricity (yes, I would certainly shut off power to that panel before doing anything).
Apologies if this has been asked and answered before, but I was unable to find anything.
Thanks,
Tyler

[Equip] Help me choose best modem to replace rented Arris TG862G/CT
We have Blast Service
Laurel, Mississippi
We're currently renting Arris TG862G/CT. Also using it as wifi router.
We do not use its Voice lines (we have no phone service with Comcast).
Looking to buy our own, either a modem/wifi router combo, or individuals, if that is the better way.
Hoping to be advised of the newest compatible model(s). We've only rented our modems, for years, but no longer wish to pay the ever-increasing rental fees.
Thank you.

Packet loss, sometimes affects speed
This morning I noticed my internet was slower than usual. I took my laptop and wired it directly to the modem. My speeds were erratic at first (around 3-7mbps). Then they seemed to stabilize a few tests later at 30mbps. That said, I still had packet loss of 10-20% to the first hop.
Tech support was no help. No outages have been reported. Signals are good.
I have a Linux VPS and ran a bash script that pinged the whole Comcast subnet I'm on. Out of the IP's that responded to ping, 12 had packet loss ranging from 1% to 13%. I know that's not a perfect test but it was the best I could come up with.
I'm wondering if that's normal or if I should call support again. The last time they basically told me if I'm online that's "all they're trained on."

[Speed] Need to replace my SB6120??
I was getting DL speeds of 10 on my 105 service tonight. Now getting 50. I noticed that at night speeds are dropping dramatically. Can get over 105 during the day. CSR said need new modem at $9 per month as 6120 is end of life. Will that help my slow night dl speed? I own the 6120 and was thinking about buying at Best Buy the SB6183. Is the 6183 the right choice?
↧
[Install] Thinking of adding Comcast, questions.
First I have Sonic.net, and while I love their pricing/lack of tiers I'm at my wits end for speed. Listening to what they're about to roll out, what they plan on doing, only will be doing if there are lots of existing customers, I don't want to wait 5 years on the off chance I might get Uverse levels of speed, I live in San Francisco, I realize there is city wide red tape but come on... lets get with the speed already and stop expanding into suburbs with low population density! I currently get 5Mbps through it, and that's not enough, if I'm watching a youtube video in HD, my wife can't do much on her end of things.
So I see they have a no-contract special of $49.95/month for 12 months. Says Internet Plus with Blast, then there's a little red (2x) next to the the box that says 105Mbps.
Question 1: Does that 2x refer to 2x 105Mbps? So a total of 210Mbps? Or is that 2x on the 50Mbps plan, and they're trying to be sneaky?
Question 2: What sort of installation costs are there? I got through to the point of saying "confirm order" but the only thing I saw was the monthly rate, it didn't mention any other fees.
Question 3: Is the modem rental useful? I'm tempted to rent it for a month, then buy my own the next month if I decide I want to keep the service. Then again if they charge me $150 I'm kind of locked in whether their service is good or not.
Question 4: What sort of installation procedure is there? My computer is a way different part of the house than my TV. Is it one box to the TV, then a cable from that to my computer? Or will I need to run Cat5e to my computer?
Question 5: Is Astound leasing Comcast lines? It seems if I want to go with internet only, which I kind of do, they have a cheaper rate, but they have the same exact tiers of speed as Comcast. While the package I'm looking at has "local channels" and HBO, I'm not totally sold on needing those. While nice, and $10/month more expensive than Astound... that $10 turns to $20 more if I want HD... which I kind of do, but not just for a single channel (HBO)

[Speed] 4 channel vs 16 channel bonding, do I understand this correctly?
Hi everybody, first let me give you a little back story. I've had performance 50/5 and was using my own Zyxel brg35503 modem with 4 channel bonding. My router died and I didn't have the money at the time for a new one so I rented a DPC3941T gateway from Comcast which is using 16 channel bonding. I also upgraded to Blast 105/10 for an extra $5 a month at the same time. I recently found out I could get a free Asus TM1900 (AC68U) router from T-Mobile so I picked one up. Since I have it now I don't need the gateway from Comcast and have reconnected my Zyxel modem and will return the gateway today.
Anyway if my understanding of channel bonding is correct the node I'm on will have a certain number of channels available that are each capable of around 40Mbps that myself and anyone else on my node shares. So during times of congestion I'm more likely to see slow downs if I'm only capable of using 4 channels as with this Zyxel than if I had a modem capable of 8 or 16 channel bonding. Is this correct?
I live in a large apartment complex so I would guess that my node would be congested, but I've tested my speeds throughout the day and night and have never seen any slow down at all. I would have expected there to be a lot of congestion after 6pm when everyone is normally home but I haven't noticed any. That being the case is there any reason I should worry about upgrading to an 8 or 16 channel modem right now?
Thanks.

[CustSvc] At work pics.... Yes I am a professional!!! 56k/DSL DIE!!!
A few have expressed interest in some of my at work pics. I have been slacking as of late, as the work we are doing is more proactive and less reactive, so its a little more rare to come across the WTF cable pics, so I grabbed a few of my old ones. Hope you guys enjoy them, ill add more as I come across them.
I am going to start with links, as that way I comment on the initial batch, going forward Ill probably attach them; but who knows....
Lets start in the Headend:

So many pretty colors....the skinny yellows are the fibers coming out of the transmitters, leaving to go into the field. The purple/aqua/pink cables are rg59he cable being used to combine up different signal types to then be put onto the fibers.
When we talk about having an upstream SNR issue, this is usually what is occurring:

CPD, or common path distortion. Two dissimilar metals, could be oxidation. could be a loose seizure screw at an amp, or a bad cable.
speaking of bad cables:

Not all cables are a few inches underground. Its not uncommon for a hardline cable to be SEVERAL feet underground close to a road. this one was about 4.5' down.

This once was only a couple. but the ground was hard a rock, so it was a pain to have to dig back.

Sometimes you get lucky and can actually kneel down in the hole to splice.

Every now and then, you get a good one. Transformer blew up and scorched the Earth. Problem was there was tap to the right of it. WAS.

Construction crews are a normal hazard. They dont care about Miss Utility markouts. They dont apply to them!

This is what happens when you give service techs tap plates. It should be a 17tap. They needed more signal, so in goes a 4. Ummmmmm no! bad tech!!!!

I was working off a ladder here; still doing service at the time (10 years ago), but my buddy (lineman) needed a hand on a saturday, so I came out to help. Fun working on the side of a 60mph highway.

When people steal cable its really quite easy to detect.

This was from a house move. Yes, They moved a whole house. Jacked up the foundation, loaded it onto a trailer, and creeped down the highway at 12mph! Had to clear all the cable lines out of the way for them.

Not a house this time! Generators for a Solar/Natural Gas plant! Bigger then a house!!! These moved at 5mph. Had to do this 4 times in 2 weeks.

4G LTE. This is the reason Cable and 4G dont get alone well!

A local 4 star casino decided they wanted us for internet, but were too cheap to buy wire management for their racks in the hotel side. I eventually had to make 196 (iirc) cut to length cat5 jumpers by hand. sigh. my hand still hurts 8 years later.

DSANs, or MDTAs in Comcast world. These convert a digital line up to analog for Hotels, or other MDUs. Expensive pieces. I had one that was crapping out on me, so I had to swap it out for a new one!
That concludes my initial photo album. Possibly more to follow!!!

What good is blast 105 when you can only get those speeds 2 hours out of a 24 hour period?

[Equip] SMC gateway stuck, power cycle needed
Almost once or twice a month, we have to manually reset the power to the SMC gateway (for business) in order for it to lock onto the various up/down channels and obtain a dynamic IP address.
Is this normal for most people?
I have seen some posts on other forums of people deploying remote power switch (IP/network based) that would do the job of monitoring Internet connection and automatically power cycle the attached equipment when it is stuck (SMC business gateway).
Anyone encountered this sort of problem and/or implementing a solution to tackle this? Thanks.
